RATIONALE

The module Introduction to Computer Systems and Networks provides the essential knowledge needed to appreciate the significance of modern computing and networking technologies in the current digital era. The module delves into the origins of computing and networking, which provides a basis for building deeper perspectives and understandings of the ongoing challenges and solutions for information security and cyber-security. With a strong focus on the practical application of all theoretical components of computer systems and networks using software, virtual machines and web development tools, this module equips students with the skills and knowledge needed to effectively operate in the ever-changing digital environment.

AIMS

The aims of this module are to:

  • Provide students with a historic overview of the evolution of computing and networking
  • Introduce students to the modern age of computing and networking technologies
  • Introduce students to the fundamental concepts of information security, information assurance and cyber-security
  • Provide students with a holistic overview of the challenges and solutions to information security and cyber-security
  • Introduce students to modern approaches to web and application development
  • Engage students in the practical application of networking, information security, cyber-security, web development and application development

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Upon successful completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

  1. Develop an appreciation and awareness of the evolution of computing and network technologies
  2. Understand the importance and necessity of computing and networking technologies in the modern era
  3. Identify and explain the different forms of security threats and challenges in the modern era
  4. Demonstrate practical skills in information security and cyber-security through ethical hacking with the use of virtual machines
  5. Understand the legal and ethical themes surrounding the internet, it's users and its connected technologies
  6. Apply an understanding of web technologies, web development and design by building basic websites
